The spectacular Organ Mountains in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

We’re Peter Howe and Liz Brown and after three-plus decades of marriage and nine years of our continued pilgrimage across the United States in our Airstream, we’re still at it. This blog continues to be a way to share what are we seeing, feeling, learning, and observing. We hope to capture in words and images some of the stories of the people we meet, the places we visit, the detail that makes a day particularly memorable.

Some of the details of our current trip:

• We are now traveling in a 2022 F-150 named Ruby.  She  follows in the tradition of Gerry, the 2015 F-150 who served us with distinction for over 180,00 miles. Ruby wears a new Tonneau cover, the full cap is gone.  The paired-down storage still allows for the newly defined essentials:  Zamp solar panels, Honda 2000i generator, the Weber gas grill, tools and repair equipment, Zip-Dee folding chairs and a screen house.  In October 2021, we renovated the kitchen area in the 2015 Airstream Flying Cloud 25, removing the round sink and counters and replacing with the new rectangular counter and sink.  Vast improvement in functionality.  See the blog from December 5, 2021 for pictures and details.
• We made the decision to slow down our criss-crossing the country. We have begun to look for longer term stays, around four to six months, in places where we feel at home.  From 2016-20 we were in Florida volunteering at a state park for several months. That door has closed for us and we focused on moving west to New Mexico to the town of Las Cruces with a plan to be here for a while.  We are planning on making it our base for fair-weather travel for several months at a time to Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, and Montana for the next few years. Colorado and California are also on the short list.
• Wherever possible, we are driving on “blue highways”, camping in state parks and the great Army Corps of Engineers sites.  BLM campgrounds are also in the recent mix and we’ve discovered some beauties.    
• On the days we drive, we aim for under 250 miles or 3:00pm, whichever comes first.  I began driving and towing two years ago which provides a break for Peter and allows us to cover a bit more distance.  We’ve found this pace will give us time to poke around the local area, enjoy the daily mid-day nap, find the great coffee shops, the library or laundromats.
